Republicans nominate Larry Horowitz of Chappaqua for County Executive.

Officially nominate Corcoran for County Legislator in District 5.

Special to WPCNR

CityLine: May 30, 2001 -- WPCNR Newsline

The Westchester County Republican Party nominated a 50 year-old lawyer from Chappaqua, Larry Horowitz, to run for County Executive against incumbent Andrew Spano last night at their convention.

Sources told WPCNR that Mr. Horowitz is an attorney, but little else was known about the long-awaited GOP candidate, as we went to the net. The Republican Party has been roundly criticised for not mounting a serious candidate to challenge Mr. Spano, to the extent that political insiders have said the Republicans have struck a deal with the Democrats not to nominate a strong contender against Andrew Spano.

The Republicans also nominated White Plains favorite daughter, Candyce Corcoran, their official candidate for County Legislator in District 5 to oppose incumbent William Ryan.

Corcoran, the former Organization Chair of the Democratic Party in White Plains, reached by WPCNR tonight, said she was estatic about the enthusiasm the Republicans accorded her tonight. She said she was particularly encouraged by the reception she got from Scarsdale Republicans, whom she said told her they were ready "to start working for her" in her race against Ryan. She told WPCNR that her adrenalin was really flowing after the convention, and "I can't wait to start running."

Corcoran will be running in the newly realigned District 5 which includes most of White Plains and most of Scarsdale. The northwest corner of White Plains is the only portion of White Plains not in District 5. The new District 5 contains 37,000 White Plains residents and 17,000 residents from Scarsdale, according to Tom Abinanti, one of the County Legislators who voted to approve the new redistricting plan last week. The District now loses North Castle and portions of West Harrison previously in the district according to Abinanti.

The convention also saw the debut of a new reporter in White Plains, Rafael Vega, who told Ms. Corcoran he was reporting for a Spanish newspaper on the convention. This is a new role for Mr. Vega, who was, according to reports WPCNR received last month was going to be William Ryan's campaign manager for Mayor of White Plains, and Mr. Vega also works for the County Legislature.
