Gedney Field -- The White Plains Little League announced its new slate of Board of Directors and Officers and its plans for the 2001 season this month.

White Plains Parents should be looking for the Official WPLL Baseball/Softball Registrations in their mailboxes in the first two weeks of January. Registrations may also be obtained at the White Plains Department of Recreation and Parks. Registrations are due back from parents February 9, 2001.

Masseroni announced that the 2001 season will begin April 14, 2001 with the city's third annual Little League Parade and Opening Day Games. The Registration Fee is $65 per child, limited to $150 per family. Participating children receive a full uniform, including hat, shirt and pants, plus accident insurance, they play a 12-game schedule, plus Play-offs on an age appropriate team and eligibility for Williamsport Little League Tournament Play in the summer. Registrations are to be returned to the WPLL, c/o the White Plains Recreation Department, 85 Gedney Way, White Plains, NY 10605.

In a letter to parents, sent with the Registration, new WPLL President, Rich Massaroni thanked "the over 300 volunteers who serve as managers, coaches, board members and commitee members who make the White Plains Little League a reality." Massaroni also thanked Department of Recreation and Parks Commissioner Joe Davidson and his staff for handling registration, scheduling and field maintenance for the league, thanking them for "a superb job!"

Massaroni also took time in the letter to thank the local sponsors who "help defray the cost of uniforms, equipment and umpires. I would like to thank all the local sponsors who have supported White Plains Little League in the past and hope they continue to support the program in the future."

Masseroni also invited new volunteers to indicate their interest in helping the league when they return their children's Registrations.

He announced that the Little League is a 12-month ongoing operation beginning in November and ending in October the following fall. He said the White Plains Little League includes Spring, Summer and Fall baseball and softball programs that last year involved over 1,300 children. His communication points out that the WPLL Little League "strives to keep teams balanced in three ways: First having 12 players per team, Second by performance (Player Evaluations), and Third, a consistent draft process.

National Little League Baseball Initiative

His Letter to Parents announced that for the first time this year, $3 of the $65 Registration Fee is going to the Little League Baseball "World of Opportunity" Capital Campaign. The Campaign, the letter says is

1. "Build and improve facilities to motivate more communities to affiliate with Little League and accommodate twice the number of teams in the World Series;"

2. "Expand the Urban Initiative, indentifying neighborhoods where a lack of recreational space and trained volunteers have previously made Little League programs unavailable and create or renew baseball and softball programs in these targeted neighborhoods;"

3. "Increase educational programs to positively influence children's total development, including safety issues on and off the field and abstinence from drugs, alcohol and spit tobacco."

4. "Enhance computer technology to improve communications to and from players, volunteers, coummunities and leagues around the world and to automate as many processes as possible."

Masseroni, in the spirit of the national initiative, said he would be looking to involve more of the White Plains community and community leaders in promoting more youth participation in baseball and softball.

New Field Improvements

Improvements in the White Plains Little League this year will see a sprinkler system installed at Gedney Field before the start of the Spring Season. The Little League is paying $10,000 towards the Sprinkler System, and the City $40,000 for the balance of the sprinklers. Batting Cages with Pitching Machines for softball and baseball will be opened behind Gedney Field for the use of Little League teams, and planned at this time, field rehabilitation at the Ridgeway School Fields.
